Raw talent is never hard to recognize. Hwy 42 is a mix of passion, dedication, and true Rock & Roll. Lead singer John Preston decided to form the band after being set free from his former label. Already having a successful solo career John wanted to create the greatest rock band ever. Lennon once said If you continue to tell yourself you the greatest somehow it just happens.

With the amazing leads of Shane Roberts and the smooth walking bass of Paolo Asuncion, great could truly be around the corner. I have been in a lot of bands in my time but none fit quite like this. - Paolo Asuncion. Hwy 42 writes all the music together. I have over 200 songs but why use the old stuff. This is a new band and a new sound. I want us to be like nothing else thats come before. - John Preston Im just in the band to get chicks - Shane Roberts Hwy 42 is currently Rocking the Bay Area and in production of their first album. Keep your eyes open for the next big thing!!!!!!!! Hwy 42 In Memory of David James Miller

I dug into this review with a very open mind, I knew nothing about this band which gave me a clean sheet to work from. I must say I was a little disappointed with my first impression with the song titled "Going Down", great lyrics and plenty of heart, but to me it sounded very 1990's in style and ability.

With the first song being a real let down I have to say I wasn't expecting anything too exciting, however.... I was slap surprised in the face when I listened to the rest of their collection. "Rockstar","She Walked out" and "Still be loving you" are the epitome of power songs. You know the ones, great riffs, bouncy bass lines and amazingly catchy choruses. These guys produce the songs that you feel that you already know, in every other song I was literally singing along to the lyrics and whistling the song for days.

Your Technical abilities are spot on, production of the music is fantastic, great job there and you guys show real identity, which is very important in this day and age. My only concern is, become rich and famous before writing songs about lesbians "Going Down". Overall very impressed, can't wait to hear more.

HEAD 2:

Hwy 42 are a real band. They write about real life and life changing experiences. But most of all they deliver it with emotion and passion and that’s what counts. It’s music created from the heart and sole and delivered with an explosive energy.

Hwy 42 have developed a perfectly mastered blend of raw rock and roll. The guitar and bass complement each other so well and alternate their lead throughout the tracks. The bass leads the direction of ‘Still be loving you’ allowing the lead guitar freedom to move, sometimes taking a back seat before forcing its way to the front for the chorus and solo. This gives the song a great rhythm and really allows the vocals to take center stage. The drums encapsulate the sound and seal it together providing the bass with a platform for those funky scales.

The music is structured beautifully and is topped by the powerful, emotion filled vocals of the lead singer John Preston. His distinctive sound results from the power and range of his voice and really gives Hwy 42 a signature sound. He has a voice that suits his lyrical style and each song almost needs to be emotional and full of meaning or it doesn’t quite fit. This is apparent in ‘Going Down’ as they seem to go off in a tangent. Rather than a signature rock power ballad, a light hearted song about lesbian relationships takes over. I don’t know whether I should be taking it seriously or as a bit of fun.

You have to give it to Hwy 42 they may still be finding their musical direction but they really have developed a solid well produced and structured sound. They have found a perfect mix which works so well, to give us toe tapping rock anthems to wind down and reminisce about past experiences to.

I'll Still Be Loving You

Guest Reviewer: Twilight's Edge

.......Going Down.......
After listening to the other three songs, this one actually turned out to be the hardest to write. It wasn't the subject matter, I've seen far worse things. I think the lyrics could of been written just a little bit better. Hwy 42 writes such fantastic songs that I think they sold themselves short on this one. OK that's it, I can't go on with this one.
Guys, please don't come after me for this one, I'm very tired after spending a considerable amount of time writing the reviews for the other three songs. It just boils down to the fact that I just don't feel anything with this particular tune. If I don't feel anything in a song, I really can't do justice to it. So enjoy the rest of the reviews. These were written because of the passion in the music and heart felt lyrics and melodies that they carry and that I feel in your music. Enjoy...........

.......Rockstar.......
This is where things start sounding great. Song starts out with a rythym guitar, slightly distorted, then in comes the bass walking and drums setting the pace right into the starting verse, perfectly timed. Which all proceed to set the mood of the tune, which is carried nicely throughout the song. Very nice song structure, loaded with melody and hooks, chorus nicely done. I like the telephone ring followed by a breif conversation that was brilliantly placed in the song and really helped carry the storyboard of this song. It just added a very unexpected effect. Song lyrics are like a book, they tell a story so well and these lyrics have great melody that is so refreshing to hear. Love the lead guitar, great phrasing of the notes. Instruments are so well blended. And for the real acid test, I played it loud and all sounded great.

.......She Walked out.......
Just when I thought it couldn't get any better, I was hit headon with this one. I love the starting of the rythm guitar with backing cymbals, adds such a solitude part of the tune. Each verse, the lyrics does a fine job of telling a story which is mixed so well with melody. This is what breathes life into this tune. The chorus comes in nicely with lead vocal placed dead center of it all. As far as the lead guitar goes, I sense tremendous passion in each passing note. It isn't the shred that makes great lead guitar but the passion that drives it. Believe me, I know what I'm talking about here. And lastly, I can't get over the lead vocal tonal quality. John was born with a vocal gift that is just heart felt and he makes very good use of his gift.

.......I'll Still Be Loving You.......
I saved the best one for last. This has to be my favorite Hwy 42 song. Great Rock Ballad that just carries you away. This tune has all the makings of a timeless piece of music. Kind of has the feel of Guns N' Roses version of "Knockin On Heavens Door". Lead vocal carries the song quite well, placing emphasis at the right moment
and place in the song. Lead guitar reminds me of Toy Caldwell (Marshall Tucker Band). Drums and Bass just flows along very nicely keeping things together. This is one cool tune to chill by, and that is a no lie. The words make complete lyrical sense mixed with some great melody lines. This is a song with passion that is bursting out at the seams. Of all their songs reviewed I thought this absolutely resonated the soul to just about the max.

.......Overall.......
Hwy 42 won me over hands down. With words that make complete lyical sense backed with melodies that are timeless. Song structure is about as good as it gets. These songs read like a book, they tell great stories. Very good chord progressions. Drums and Bass remind alot of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie. Smooth lead guitar that is filled with passion, note after note that fit the songs so well. Nothing flashy here, just songs with a solid foundation. We have here a union of musicians that are perfect for each other and compliment each
others playing when performing those songs written. This whole thing reminds me of Bad Company, great lyrics, great melodies and above all, great musicians/artists. And one final word, kudos to the recording engineer and mastering engineer on these songs. Great recording job.
